When you have a toothache, you should always make a call to the dentist. Often, toothaches have serious causes, like infected tooth roots or cavities, that must be treated. While you await your dental appointment, however, you will want to do something to keep yourself comfortable. These home remedies can help.

Clove Oil

Clove oil is often recommended as a pain relieving remedy for teething babies, and it can knock the pain out of adults' mouths, too. Purchase a clove oil preparation made specifically for this use at the store, or make your own by diluting a drop or two of clove essential oil with a few drops of almond or olive oil. You don't want to use clove oil full-strength, as it might irritate your gums. Rub the diluted oil onto your painful tooth and the surrounding gums. The pain should dissipate within a minute or two. Repeat as needed.

Ginger Cayenne Paste

Ginger is known for alleviating inflammation, and cayenne pepper contains capsaicin, which is a potent pain reliever. Combine the two, and you have an excellent toothache remedy. Mix together ½ teaspoon ground cayenne pepper and ½ teaspoon ground ginger. Add enough olive oil to make a paste, and then pack the mixture around the painful tooth. Leave it in place for as long as you can stand the strong flavor.

Tea Bags

Black tea is said to help relieve pain. The tannins it contains help suck moisture out of swollen tissues, reducing inflammation, which in turn reduces pain levels. Brew a cup of tea, but don't thrown out the bag. Instead, place it in your mouth between your cheek and the painful tooth. Let it sit for as long as you're comfortable, and then replace it with a fresh one.

Plain Old Salt

If your toothache happens to be due to an infection, this remedy will work wonders. Simply mix a teaspoon or so of salt into a cup of warm water, and them swish mouthfuls around before spitting them out. The salt helps kill bacteria that are causing an infection and also encourages any infection-related fluids to drain. If your toothache has some other cause, you may experience little relief – but it's worth the try.

Remember that these toothache remedies are not meant to be a substitute for proper dental care. They will temporarily relieve your pain, but they won't treat the underlying problem that's causing your toothache. For full relief, visit a dentist like Schererville Family Dentistry, PC.
